FAQ
About the Brand & Inspiration:
-
NOUSA was born from a wish of self expression: the desire to feel free in our own skin and to wear clothes that reflect who we really are!
-
NOUSA was founded by Ilona & Giorgio, a couple coming from two very different backgrounds in fashion. Ilona studied fashion design in an Art Academy in the Netherlands and worked for iconic names in fashion from sewing on buttons to selling Haute Couture, while Giorgio has developed his commercial and aesthetic insights from a young age working his way up in a few cool European denim brands.
-
At NOUSA, our mission is simple: to create clothing that makes you feel like yourself. We believe in dressing to express — to feel at ease, to be present, and to live exactly like who you are.
Our philosophy is to create a slow identity wear: a slower, more intentional way of dressing that supports your individuality.
-
Most of the year we live in Ibiza, and when we’re not here, we’re in Bali where we produce our collection. These two islands, so far away from each other, share something we deeply connect with: a sense of freedom, of release, the possibility to be just who you are without any filters.
Our designs come from this balance: from slow moments and the struggle of growth, raw textures and the freedom we feel when we stop pretending.
-
Ibiza gives us a space to connect with so many different kinds of inspiring humans and the freedom of non judgement. Bali teaches us a kind of wild clarity, patience and the acceptance of going with the flow. That special feeling of presence in how nature holds emotion.
-
We ended up producing in Bali through a curious chain of events: an adventurous discovery trip to Bali, a few casual production contacts and an open heart :)
But as soon as we landed and started working there, it felt like something moved us. There’s a depth to Bali, and a creative pulse that’s hard to explain.
What really captured us, though, were the people. The kindness, the attention, the feeling of being part of something shared. It’s become more than just a place of production ,it’s part of our process, our way of being.
-
Our clothes are made in two small workshops in Bali where local artisans work in a calm, respectful and familiar environment. It’s not a big factory setup. It’s more human, more artisanal. There’s a sense of balance in the way they work. And we believe that’s exactly the kind of energy you should feel when you wear NOUSA.
-
We don’t just work with local artisans, we’ve grown with them. The two workshops we produce with in Bali are both run by local families, and over time, we’ve developed something that feels more like friendship than just business. There’s trust, care, lots of laughs and a shared sense of doing things the right way. That’s the kind of collaboration we believe in.
Product care & Materials:
-
We design everything here on our home island, Ibiza. Every year, we tweak and adapt the fits based on what feels more fluid, more in tune with the moment. It’s kind of a collaboration between us and what we see around us — how people dress, what inspires us, what makes us feel good.
The actual production happens in Bali. That’s where the collection really takes shape through sampling, testing colors, and finding those unexpected fabrics or finishes that end up adding the final, special touch. So it’s a bit like a two-part process: Ibiza brings the idea, Bali helps us bring it to life.
-
We’ve been working with two small, family-run workshops in Bali for about eight years now. We originally created all the base patterns ourselves, and now we evolve each new collection by building on those – tweaking the shapes and fits as we go.
Every winter, we head to Bali to choose the fabrics in person — we need to touch them, try them on, move in them. That’s actually a big part of our process: we test the samples on ourselves first, to see how they feel in real life, how the fabrics react, how the garments move with the body.
Most of the colors you see in our collections are dyed especially for us. We rarely use pre-dyed fabrics — we prefer working with local dye houses to create tones that feel original and really reflect the mood of the collection.
-
We mostly use natural materials like cotton and linen — sometimes blended with a bit of hemp. For womenswear, we also work with viscose, and we’re now using more and more ECOVERO, a more sustainable kind of viscose, as well as TENCEL, which is made from wood pulp like viscose but with a closed-loop process that uses way less water and creates less waste.
We’ve also started to introduce some pieces in organic cotton. Switching entirely to certified organic cotton is a longer journey — it takes time and it’s more expensive, but it’s definitely where we’re headed.
One thing that really matters to us is how the fabric feels on the skin. We’re always looking for materials that are soft, breathable, and move naturally with the body. That feeling of ease and comfort is at the heart of every piece we make.
-
Most of our fabrics are dyed in local dye houses in Bali, where we create our own colors based on the feeling we want the collection to evoke. We’ve started experimenting with natural dyes in small capsule pieces — we even did a workshop deep in the jungle near Ubud to learn more about the traditional techniques and local plants.
That said, natural dyeing is still a bit of a challenge — it’s beautiful but less consistent, and the costs are much higher, so we haven’t yet found a way to include it fully in our production. But we’re super curious to keep exploring and see how and when we can bring it in.
Stay tuned!
-
We do our best to be as sustainable as we can. We only work with natural fabrics — you’ll never find polyester or synthetic materials in our collections. All our fabrics are sourced locally in Bali, where we also produce everything, working closely with local artisans we’ve known for years. Even our tags are made from cotton and linen.
We also keep our productions intentionally small — nothing is mass produced. We always aim to produce with our true potential sales in mind, and anything left from the collection, we sell ourselves at a few of the beautiful artisanal markets in Ibiza.
There is always room for improvement, but every choice we make goes in the direction of care — for the people we work with, for the planet, and for whoever wears our clothes.
-
First of all, we carefully select where we get our fabrics. Most of the places we source from in Bali have been around for decades, and just the fact that they’ve stood the test of time is already a guarantee of the quality they offer.
Once we choose the fabric and define our custom dye, we test everything on ourselves — we wear it, wash it, live in it — to make sure it holds up, resists wear, and lasts well beyond a season. We want our clothes to live a long life alongside the people who wear them.
We also only use high-quality accessories. All our zippers are YKK, globally recognized as the best, and our buttons are metal to ensure durability. The threads we sew with are the best available, and we double-stitch areas like trouser crotches and pockets to make sure they don’t give out.
At the end of production, each piece goes through a quality check to catch any imperfections or flaws. That said, we’re all human, and every now and then a tiny spot or small fabric defect might slip through. Before shipping anything out, though, we always give it a last look to make sure it’s in great condition.
If we ever find a piece with a minor defect, we either keep it for ourselves, gift it to a friend, or sell it at a very reduced price — just to make up for the imperfection.
-
Everything we do is made in small batches. We don’t believe in mass production — it just doesn’t align with how we see clothing or the relationship we want to have with it.
Each collection is produced in limited quantities, intentionally. We choose to create only what we believe in, and what we feel will truly be worn and loved.
If something turns out to be a favorite, we might reproduce it later, maybe with small improvements, to keep it feeling fresh and thoughtful. What’s left from a collection doesn’t go to waste — we where people can still discover it the following year.
That way, every piece has a real chance to find someone who loves it — and nothing goes to waste.
-
This is something we genuinely care about — and always take the time to explain in person. Our pieces are made from natural fabrics with a soft weave, so they require a bit of extra love to stay beautiful over time.
We recommend washing them at 30°C with a gentle spin cycle (ideally no more than 600 rpm). A high spin speed stresses the fibers, which can cause them to shrink or look worn out too quickly. Depending on your machine, a delicate or even wool setting often works best.
Another important tip — and this applies to all natural or dyed fabrics, not just ours — is to avoid drying them in direct sunlight. Strong sun can fade the colors faster, especially under Ibiza’s summer skies.
A little care goes a long way. Treat your clothes gently, and they’ll last beautifully.
Sizing & Fit:
-
At NOUSA, we use what we like to call intuitive sizing. Instead of the usual size labels, we number our sizes — 1, 2, 3, 4 (and sometimes 5) — to leave more room for personal expression and freedom of fit.
Traditional sizes can feel limiting or even discouraging sometimes. Our approach leaves space for you to choose based on how you like to wear a piece — more fitted, more relaxed, or somewhere in between. Many of our customers fit more than one size depending on the style they’re going for.
To help guide your choice, you’ll find detailed measurements for each size on every product page, along with a short note on the intended fit. And for a deeper dive, our Size Guide offers a complete overview of fits, cuts, and how they compare.
As always, if you’re in doubt, feel free to reach out — we’re here to help you find the right match.

Start by checking our Intuitive Size Guide on every product page of the new collection. There, you’ll see detailed measurements and a short note about the fit of each piece. For the previous collections please check the Size Guide.
Our tip? The easiest and most accurate way to choose your size is to compare the measurements with a similar item you already own and love the fit of. It’s often more helpful than measuring your own body.
As a quick example:
if you usually wear a size M — or a 30 inches on the waist in denim — you’ll likely be a Size 2 in our system for a regular fit.
That said, many of our customers love to play with sizing. If you’re into a more relaxed or oversized look, you might feel great in a Size 3 — or even a Size 4 for shirts and tees, depending on your style.
And if you’re unsure, just reach out — we’re always happy to help you find your perfect fit.

We’ve done a few custom pieces for special clients in the past, and it was a beautiful experience — but the reality is that made-to-order work takes time and energy that go well beyond our small production rhythm. Even creating a single piece in a different fabric or size (even if it’s part of the collection) can require almost the same effort as producing a full mini-series.
To price it fairly — both for you and for the people who make it — we’d have to charge much more than we feel comfortable asking.
Same goes for alterations: we’d need a dedicated part of our team just for that. And since most of our customers are in Europe, while our pieces are made in Bali, the back-and-forth isn’t as fluid as we’d like it to be (yet!).
That said, this kind of personal, intentional approach is close to our hearts — and we’re definitely exploring ways to bring it to life in the future.
-
Don’t you worry — most of our styles are what we call slow staples: pieces we repeat season after season, especially when they’re loved by our community.
Sometimes we’ll play with a different fabric or introduce a new shade, but if it’s a bestseller (or just a good solid basic), there’s a good chance it’ll come back.
And even if it doesn’t return exactly the same, we usually create something very close — same spirit, slightly different vibe — that might just fit your wardrobe even better.
That said: if a piece is sold out online, definitely write to us. There might still be one available at one of our partner stores, and we’ll do our best to track it down for you. If not, we’ll figure something out — promise.

It gives you both the measurements in centimeters and a quick idea of how the piece is meant to fit — so you can compare it to something you already own and love the fit of. (Trust us, it’s often more helpful than measuring your body.)
